Free Fire Sculpture, Lydney

Philip Bews Diane Gorvin
Sculpture for public sites

Taurus Crafts, Lydney, Forest of Dean
Commissioned by Taurus Crafts

‘Free' was constructed to celebrate of the abolition of slavery. The triangular structure was supported by a softwood pole framework 6m high. The softwood board cladding created intricate patterns. The triangle rested on a 2m diameter wood sphere.

A small sailing ship was located at the top of the triangle. The triangle represented the three-way, 18th Century slave trade. The sphere was the earth and the ship represented the thousands of slave shipments. Tribal Vibes from Senegal used our fire shapes to set fire to the sculpture and performed fire dances and drumming.
