Tudor Woman, Telford
Tudor Woman
Commissioned by Telford Development Corporation. First sited in Apley Castle Park and then resited to Cherry Garden, Telford
Loosely based on a drawing by Hans Holbein the Younger, the sculpture is a double sided clay relief cast in glass reinforced ciment fondue, with internal metal armature and fixings.
She represents a white lady ghost seen in Apley Castle's grounds - the relief looks 3 dimensional when approached directly from the front, or from the back, but distorts and becomes thinner viewed from the side. The winding path she was placed on allowed for a changing view of the work.
She was removed from the site and given a new home in Cherry Garden after a storm brought down trees that narrowly missed her.
Recently we saw that she had been repainted and moved to Maxwell Garden, Telford. It looks to be a better position than Cherry Garden, as she can been seen from many viewpoints and the setting looks similar to her first woodland site.
The lower two images were taken by Michael and Janet Richardson for Art UK.
