Time and Tide

Customs and Excise Headquarters, Queen's Dock, Liverpool. Commissioned by Customs and Excise and Merseyside Development Corporation with additional sponsorship from PSA Building Management, PSA Projects, the North West Arts Board, Wimpey Construction Ltd, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the Foundation for Sport and the Arts, and Bucknall Austin plc

Description:

Two steel columns, five metres high, each supporting a two metre high cast bronze figure. Columns spaced 45 metres apart sited symmetrically to the building frontage. Also a total of 50 metres of cast GRC (glass fibre reinforced cement) relief panels fixed to the existing curved dock wall.

Theme concerned with former function of Queens Dock for ship repair and also new use of building.

Artist liaised with designers, PSA Projects Birmingham, over paving design and base installation. Liaison with steel fabricator, Oldroyd Bros., Runcorn, for design, manufacture and installation of steel columns. Bronze casting by Castle Fine Arts Foundry who assisted installation. Reliefs installed by the artist with an assistant. Manufacture of GRC panels by BCM Contracts, Whitchurch.Column bases and paving installed under main building contract, Wimpey Construction UK.
